Do you know about dog-safe essential oils?

Only a few essential oils are suitable for your furry friend and we are here to tell you all about it.

Let’s admit that we are in complete awe of our furry friends at home. We bring goodies and treats for them more than often. They are our family members in fact and we just cannot stop caring enough for them.

If you are someone who’s a fan of essential oils and have a pet at home then why not arrange for a spa like experience for our pet as well.

Essential oils are not considered entirely safe for pets specially dogs because of their high sensitivity to smell as compared to humans. It can act as an irritant for them as it works for us when someone wears a strong cologne or perfume. So, we do not want them to have any adverse effects. This is why it is important to know which essential oil is safe for dogs and how they should be used for them.

We have brought you a list of essential oils that are safe for dogs but before beginning, it is best to have a quick consultation with your veterinary doctor as a precaution.

So here we go…

Ginger

Ginger has a similar effect on dogs as it has on humans. Ginger soothes stress and promotes easy breathing. It also enhances the digestive function of your pet. Interestingly, it also helps them in joint pain.

Cedarwood Oil

Cedarwood oil has a calming effect on dogs. It can be used in a diffuser to calm your dog during hyperactivity. It also discourages insects and improves their skin health.

Now when we know about which essential oils are safe for your furry friend, let’s check out how to use them. It is essential to realize that their skin is not similar to ours and they have a higher sense of smell than us. When you are looking out for ways to introduce essential oil to your dog, try these out.

  1. Let them sniff mildly from afar: Keep the essential oil at a good distance from your dog and let the light smell guide its way to relaxation and healing.
  2. Dilute it, Always: In certain cases, you might require to apply essential oil directly on your dog’s coat or skin. In that case, always dilute the oil with olive oil or water. 1 drop essential oil with 10 drops of water for large dogs and 1 drop of essential oil with 25-30 drops of water for small sized dogs.
  3. Use a diffuser: Diffuse a little oil in your house for you and your dog to enjoy together. Just keep the quantity of oil as little as you would use for yourself because a strong smell can disturb your dog.

Try to always look for signs if your dog is liking or disliking the smell of essential oil. This will help you to understand the needs of your furry friend better and try to NOT USE any or every essential oil on your dog. So, the next time when you enjoy essential oil day include your dogs preference too and enjoy it together.
