How sleep cleans our brain and why it is important?

We have been talking a lot about how sleep affects us. Let’s under why is it important for us to sleep and how the brain cleans itself when we sleep. Yes, the brain cleans itself, you read it right.

Our brain is a complex place and what happens there is still a mystery we are solving one at a time but one thing is sure that sleeping has a lot to do with our wellbeing. From curing a lot of ailments to keeping us sane, sleeping proves to be essential for our healthy survival and like our body the brain too needs cleansing from time to time. Sleep cleans the brain…literally.

You must have heard that we need to cleanse our thoughts from time to time, take a break and breathe, to get our thoughts clear. We also follow a routine to clean our body fluids. Most of it happens naturally through the kidney. We drink detox water to drain unwanted toxins from our body. Similarly, our brain also needs to sleep to start the cleaning process.

Studies suggest that when we sleep, the cerebrospinal fluid in the glymphatic system washes down the brain, clearing unnecessary waste.

1] Lack of sleep induces diseases

Humans have a knack for training themselves very quickly. Likewise, we have somehow trained ourselves to sleep less. But this has badly affected our health and has been linked to medical conditions and diseases like type2 diabetes, heart disease, blood pressure, stroke, obesity, poor mental health, etc.

Studies have shown that sleep improves the immune function of the body which is why when sick, doctors always advise us to take ample rest and prescribes medicines that induces sleep. It has also been found in the studies that people sleeping for the minimum 8 hours are less likely to fall severely sick from common illness like cold, when compared to people who sleep lesser than 7 hours. Can you believe how simple staying away from the cold can be?

3] Sleep improves memory

Yes, sleep does improve memory. When we sleep our brain does a lot of work and one of them is to consolidate and process all the information and memory received during the day. So, not getting enough sleep might hinder that process and leave you with poor memory. It simply filters out the information received during the day for you to remember later.
